Creative authorship
My role as a designer is not always limited to the visual execution of an existing idea.
My work may include originating ideas, developing concepts, creative direction, problem-solving, experimentation and prototyping, consultancy as well as producing the finished design.
Where I have originated or substantially developed a concept, I expect my contribution to be represented and credited accurately.
Attribution
The credit given should reflect the work I actually contributed.
Where appropriate, this may include:
Design by Victoria Herriman
Concept and design by Victoria Herriman
Concept developed by Victoria Herriman
Conceived, developed and designed by Victoria Herriman
Please do not describe my contribution solely as design, artwork or graphics where I was also responsible for originating or substantially developing the underlying concept.
Authorship of my work
Permission to use my work does not transfer authorship.
My original work should not be presented as having been created by another individual or organisation.
Where applicable, I assert my right to be identified as the author of my copyright work and my other applicable moral rights under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.
Concepts & collaboration
Copyright does not protect an abstract idea in itself. However, where I have originated or substantially developed a concept, I expect that contribution to be acknowledged accurately.
Where work has genuinely been developed collaboratively, credit should reflect the contributions of those involved.
I do not claim credit for work or ideas that aren't mine, and I expect the same consideration in return.
Consultancy & creative expertise
My creative expertise, advice and professional judgement are part of my professional practice.
Requests for concept development, creative direction, strategic input, problem-solving, project development or advice based on my professional expertise may constitute consultancy rather than design delivery.
Consultancy is a professional service in its own right and should be commissioned and agreed separately where it falls outside the scope of an existing project.
Similarly, commissioning consultancy does not automatically include ownership or transfer of my underlying professional know-how, methodology or working processes.
Attribution does not equal permission
Crediting me does not automatically grant permission to reproduce, adapt, distribute or commercially use my work.
Similarly, permission to use my work does not remove or transfer my authorship.
Please see my Copyright & Intellectual Property page for information about permitted use, commercial use, professional know-how, AI and licensing.
